Many times throughout my mom’s life she was told how much she resembled Queen Elizabeth. In fact my mom gave birth in 1949 to the 1st New Years baby (my older sis) in Calgary, Canada. I recall mom telling us just how frustrated she was with the little bit of privacy she encountered during that time. Having the 1st baby of the year was nothing compared to the constant interruptions from doctors and nurses who came from every floor of the hospital just to get a glimpse of whom they thought was the Queen of England. It became a fun memory to talk about in our house through the years.
My mothers parents left England for Niagara Falls, Canada before my mom was born, and I recall fond memories of her telling us about our maternal grandparents. In fact my grandfather had a ticket to sail out of Southampton on the Titanic but had to rebook passage for a later date. He was in England helping his family settle the estate of one of our deceased relatives and there were some loose ends to tie up before he could leave. I often marvel at how that glitch in time could have changed our entire family history; especially since the Titanic went down in 1912, before my mom was born.
Speaking of changes in family history, somewhere in our genealogy line we are related to a Lady in Waiting from the courts of England, but lost our place when she ran off and married her chauffer. What a disgrace she must have been to her family. I wonder if they ever forgave her for giving up her birthright in order to marry a common coachman. I’ll have to ask my brother if he has been able to unravel the mystery with a name of Ms. Lady So-and-So, because I’d sure like to have a word with her once I’m on the other side. I’d ask her just what she was thinking when she decided to forsake her good name for love, and if she ever considered how many future generations that little decision would affect. It’s always fun to imagine how different life could have been. But it is what it is and I wouldn’t change a thing….well, maybe a few things.
